All of the new laptop technology terms are hard to keep up with, especially for the laptop newbie. Graphics chipset, CPU, 64-bit … what does this all mean? Well, it is important to be up to date and understand all of these laptops terms in order to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to modern laptops. After all, small laptops are now outselling their desktop predecessors, and for good reason: Laptops out-performing desktops entirely!

Notebook or laptop computer is a portable computer that can be easily carried around, and is capable of performing all possible functions of a computer. Notebook, that usually weighs around 2.2 to about 18 pounds, comes in various sizes and varied possible features.

People, who are used to working on computers, find notebooks almost as convenient to use as they have been using it already. These days there are various kinds of notebooks that are available in the market. These can be broadly classified as Ultra-Mobile PCs (or the UMPCs), the desktop replacement computers and the ultraportables. While the Ultra-Mobile PCs are laptops that can be easily carried around owing to their extra small size, the powerful desktop replacement computers are mostly to be used in a fixed place. They are more bulky and weigh more as compared to the expensive ultraportables that are specifically meant for those business travelers who need small as well as light weight notebooks that can be easily carried around, while traveling around.

Notebooks are especially useful to those who have to work on computers for long hours, or are heavily depended on computers for their work. Though notebooks may not be as powerful as computers tend to be for the same price range, they are capable of performing all the functions that any computer would perform. There are a number of varieties one can choose from and the special features, included in each notebook, vary from one model to another. Much it depends on the price range and the manufacturer.

What are the benefits of laptop programs?

According to Carvin, “computers are an invaluable tool for providing active collaborative learning.”  Though 1:1 computing programs vary in design– some schools provide a laptop for every child at a certain grade level, while others put laptops on carts and circulate them among many classes. But, in all these programs, computers are used for:

• Drafting, editing and publishing work with word processing programs .
• Using graphic-organizer software, such as Inspiration, to brainstorm and create projects .
• Navigating subject-specific instructional units at a student’s own pace.
• Fact-gathering and research using carefully selected educational websites.
• Individualizing instruction so teachers can act as guides to student-driven learning .

Technology is not education but it’s an only means for providing education. And what I believe is that the means for providing education should be as affordable, cheap and accessible as possible. If these OLPC really wants to do contribute for the education of these poor children from poor community, it’s not necessary to develop this kind of expensive electronic gadget which costs billions of dollars in research and development itself. But help them by providing pencils, notebooks and textbooks which are far cheaper than $100 laptop. It’s the responsibility and duty of the technocrat like Negroponte to think about the use of technology in education but it’s also their duty to make the technology affordable, accessible and efficient for general use.
